Preventative Care

Childhood Immunisations

Blood Pressure
This should be checked every 5 years from the age of 30.


Influenza Injections
An annual vaccination for patients over 60 years old and/or with a long term conditions. These are undertaken by practice nurses in October.


Pneumonia vaccinations
For patients over 65 years old. Usually only 1 is required in a lifetime. Please see the practice nurse to check your status and for the vaccination.


Chlamydia Testing
A simpel swab for females and urine test for males targetted at those under 25 years old. Please make an appointment to see the practice nurse.


Cervical Cancer Vaccination
This is aimed at women under 19 years old who have not had sexual intercourse. The vaccines are undertaken by school nurses. Please contact the school nurse in the first instance or one of our practice nurses for advice.


Breast Mammography
3 yearly mammograms for women between the ages of 50 and 65 years. Call up takes place automatically. You can contact Derriford Breast Screening Unit on 01752 792699.


Breast Examination
Regular self examinations are important. You can contact our practice nurse for advice if you wish.


Glaucoma
All relatives of those with glaucoma should be checked by an optician every 5 years from the age of 40. Please contact your optician to arrange this.


Retinal Screening
Retinal Screening is used to identify diabetic eye conditions. For those patients with diabetes annual screening is held at the medical centre and you will automatically be called for an appointment if appropriate.


Aneuerysm Screening
This screening is to montior those at risk of aortic aneurysm. Screening is held at the medical centre and you will automatically be called if appropriate.


Diabetes Screening
This is a blood test for those in at risk groups including those: with a family member who had diabetes, who are overweight, who had diabetes in pregnancy and who are of Afro-Carribbean or Asian ethnic origin. Please make an appointment with a member of the nursing team if you fall into one of these groups.

Cardio Vascual Risk Assessment
This is a simple blood test for patients 40 years old and over to assess the risk of heart attacks or stroke. Please make an appointment to see a member of the nursing team to undergo this assessment.
